  • A thread for a bargains/clearances at garden center tip offs?

    Morning all,

I was just wondering if there is a thread where people mention where they have come across excellent bargains at garden centers at the time of coming across them e.g. one time I went to a garden center to find seed packets at 50p as it was a clearance!

I am asking this for several reasons:
    - I was lucky to come across the above situation so any 'tip offs' would be greatly appreciated
    - I aim to fill my allotment patch (as I have finally cleared all the weeds) with lots of different edible & non edible plants and I do not have much to spend but lots of space to fill!
    - I am a novice and I am vulnerable to over spending/being ripped off and I would hate to not being able to let my enthusiasm wane due to money limitis
    - I wouldn't mind buying some plants which would end up going in the skip and being able to bring them back to life - saving money and plants!

    Thanks for your time,

    Samuel

There are regular wilko threads pointing out when they have offers on.

You will quite often find other gardeners only too willing to pass on plants. I chat to someone up the road who is always free to pass on his spares.

talking to fellow allotment holders and swapping extras is a great way too

Morrisons flower buckets. 8 for a quid. Can't go wrong with them. Ask the lady in charge of the flowers if you can't see them.

Think talking to other allotmenteers, and offering to share, seeds or plants is best idea, cos you often find lots will germinate at once, and someone else will have surplus of something you'd like. E.g you'll find people throwing their strawberry runners, you just to be there and ask if you can have them.

Somebody here will always post a thread about the start of the 50p seed clearance like this http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...eds_74126.html
Plant clearances can be more difficult as they often depend on what is left over at each garden centre or DIY store so won't be nationwide.
If you want seeds you can swap your own for some in the Virtual Seed Parcel (VSP) http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...nce_68032.html

Yep 50p seed day is 31st Aug (or thereabouts). Too late usually to sow them for that year but as they should still last a year or 2.

Another money saving tip for fruit bushes is to buy a decent sized one and take cuttings almost immediately. Withi a year or two you'll be well on your way to a decent fruit patch. The key is spending a bit extra in tbe first place. Or you can get then for about a quid in a cheap shop but the last few of those died on me.

I know Aldi's have a small supply of vegetable seeds available at the moment for 39p, I picked up some little gem lettuce and some mixed salads the other day.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
