    Suggestions for a corner of the patio

    We have a vine in the corner of the patio. It's hopeless and produces half a dozen bunches of pea sized fruit with massive pips each year. I'm fed up of it so it's coming out. I've done all the research about pruning etc but it doesn't want to know.

    I'm looking for suggestions as to what can be planted in its place. It's planted in the corner of the patio (one slab removed). The walls that make up said corner face south and west, so it gets plenty of sun.

    Was thinking of a kiwi, but saw some scary pictures on here the other night about how quickly they grow and was put off a bit. Bearing in mind the proximity to the house walls, what should I grow?

    Wise decision about the kiwi, Vince!! What about a fig? or a fruit tree trained against the walls?

        Possibly an apple tree? I've not seen them trained at a 90 degree angle before, but given they'd have support of 2 walls I can't see why it would be a problem.

            Hmmm fresh figs [wipes drool off chin]......veeeeery interesting. How big do the roots get VC? Don't want them lifting up the rest of the patio or, even worse, the walls of my house!!

            My dad has a huge one down the bottom of his garden, thinking about it, the trunks quite thick.

              Some sort of tree fruit would be good. As I said to VC, my only concern is how deep the roots would go and disturb other slabs and/or walls.

                Figs are meant to be planted in a confined space with limited root room so it may suit you.
                There are some photos of my 2 figs here http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...fig_66063.html . As you see, pruning and controlling growth is not my forte!! Its easier to control than the kiwi is though!

                  Yes, I could sink 2 further slabs to box it in the corner. Mrs Vince also came up with the bright idea of putting our blueberry in the corner because (a) it's outgrowing its pot and (b) with the vine out of the way we could put something else in that pot and train it up the wall. Would obvioulsy have to wait until it wrnt dormant to do that and tip a load of ericacious in first.
