  • Stupid question of the day: Can I 'water' an olive plant with olive oil?

I have another stupid question for today...

    * The story of how I've ended up with a massive bottle of olive oil i cant use. Skip this if you want*

I was given a huge bottle of extra virgin olive oil from a discount supermarket which I don't want to name in case this is libel.

Anyway, my bf is deadly allergic to nuts. Whenever we used the said olive oil he had a mild allergic reaction. Long story short, I read an article which says that sometimes olive oil is 'cut' with hazelnut oil because that is cheaper by unscrupulous merchants. They way to tell if it's pure olive is to leave it in the fridge - if it's pure it will go cloudy. Mine didn't so pretty sure it's tainted.

Anyway.. I've also been given a mini olive bush. Would I be able to fertilise the bush with the blood of it's brethren? Maybe give it a small glug of oil once a week to help it grow big, strong and fruitful?

To be honest- I've never heard of that before- and I can't see how the plant could absorb the oil.
I would have thought that any oil would contaminate soil in the long run

I'm happy to be proved wrong- but I wouldn't risk it- sorry

I don't 'know' either but I don't think it would benefit your olive bush much.

There are lots of 'beauty' type uses for olive oil though (and I doubt it having some nut oil in would matter).

Ah well, back to the drawing board. But you can still water tomatoes with ketchup and mint with mojitos, right?

Seahorse - I shall be Googling recipes for body scrubs now I think. I hate to waste anything.

UUUrrrmmmmmm...I would be careful with beauty products if he's going to be in contact with your flesh

I know someone who had bought a really expensive lipstick a few years ago and had a massive reaction to the nut oil it contained....if she had kissed someone like yr b/f he's have ended up in hospital too!

            maybe I'm being over cautious....but.......

Haha! No, he's fine touching it (and we can kiss if I've eaten nuts, weirdly. Not that I want to tempt fate).

I'm not advising self-medication but after reading this maybe you should buy a pipette and add a little to his food each day!!

no, you can't oil olive trees
it can be used as a moisturiser, a few drops on top of your water butt water will keep mosquitoes down, I used to use it to make my bumpers shine, probably can be used on leather shoes too, but only sparingly. Use it toil your bike chain, or your sqeaky revolving line( can you tell I've got one?), door hinges etc.

If really desperate....chuck it in a bucket of sand; leave inside your shed and dip your tools in it once you have finished using them. Keep them lovely and clean.

You can put it into small containers and use as makeup remover (especially for mascarra, its very gentle). I paid a fortune for a posh one and to me its exactly the same stuff.

No you can not use it as it's against EU regulations beleve it or not.
Our chairman at are last agm read out a set of 600 chemicals banned under EU rules as he was a former chemist , but even he didn't know what some of them where.

These include , salt ,viniger and oil of any discription.

Update: I emailed the discount shop in question and they didn't get back to me about whether there's a chance their products could be contaminated (I was really polite too!) so I've contacted trading standards and they are going to look into it.

BF thinks I've gone too far - keeps joking that the headlines will be 'popular discount sotre closes, 5,000 jobs axed'. Meh.

Marthaclematis - you are welcome to the bottle if they don't need it for testing. Will keep you posted...
