Hi all, just wondering if it's a bit early to sow tomato seed's yet in a consevatory ( heated during the night) Bristol area.

You could sow a couple of basket toms but for cordons I'd wait a few weeks. I'm not that far from you and I generally sow my main lot of toms in early March.
Rember that tomatoes are tender plants so can't go out until your last frost date and ideally when temps are in double figures through the night.
If you start too early you may well end up with leggy plants - too warm and not enough light...but daylight hours are lengthening and if your conservatory will cope with several big plants until May, trying one or two now won't hurt - see this thread:https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...9-a_98334.html
And then you could sow your main crop in the first week of March....even then be warned, tomatoes can grow fast. Will you be growing them on outside?Last edited by Scarlet; 11-02-2019, 08:37 PM. -

Hi Red and welcome!
I've sown almost all of my tomatoes, and it's very likely too early, but I have the wonderful freedom of having a whole three bed house to myself, and upstairs is very warm. This is where I place all my freshly sown seed trays. Once germinated they get banished downstairs, which is just as light, but much cooler. This slows their growth and they don't get too leggy.
Experiment and you'll soon find what works best in your circumstances

Welcome red, I am a great believer in if you don't try you will never know, sadly it is also never learn, as I have sowed some of my tomatoes alreadyit may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Hi Red - I'm across the channel from you. I've sown all my mini toms and am working up to sowing the maincrop ones, beginning of March. I start mine in a heated propagator indoors and keep the seedlings on the bedroom window until the weather warms up. If I had the luxury of a heated conservatory (as long as it stayed up 10C overnight) I'd be keeping the seedlings in there. You may need a bit more heat to germinate them though!.Comment

Many thanks to you all, will be planting toms outside, just wanted to get started early.
Cucumders and Chillies in a green house and I may try sweet peppers in there too.at the moment my allotment is a sea of grass ( took it on in January) will be using raised beds and i will be trying a no dig plot.Comment
