  • second crop on early potatoes

I have had some earlies seed potatoes arrive today but i am hoping to grow them so they can be harvested in Dec. I was thinking of container growing from the end of Aug, but have had conflicting advice on what to do with them til then - any ideas?
    a) - keep them in the fridge wrapped up & dark
    b) - keep them somewhere cool & light so the shoots green
    c) - something else

You need to keep them cool and dark to hold them back. You don't want them sprouting until later in the year.

If they are already well sprouted and ready to plant then I don't have a suggestion, I'm afraid.

Thanks Martin, you have instantly lowered my stress levels haha little things i know but don't want to do the wrong thing & waste them.
They haven't sprouted yet so do you think wrapped in newspaper in the fridge for a couple of months will be ok?

Yes they'll be fine in there as long as they don't actually freeze solid, which will kill them. Salad tray should be okay.

You do realise they are not frost hardy so when you do plant them you will have to keep them frost free until harvest. With a winter like the last one you'll be fine, but if it's like the previous three you could struggle.

            When I've tried this, frost-free wasn't a problem ... but blight-free was.
I remember reading somewhere that first earlies don't have much blight resistance to begin with.

Why not grow them now then store them in the cool and dark until Christmas ?
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.
