  • Rather annoyed

I'm just starting out with growing veggies and i'm using the greenhouse in the garden. I have a fair few plants growing in there now. My mum just went in and is now going on about how my plants are bone dry. I watered them this morning, now i water from the bottom up so the roots grow down rather than near the surface. If you stick a finger in just below the surface is lovely and moist. Its just the surface is dry. Thing is, does she have a very small point, should i allow the plants to soak up more water so the surface is wet as well? I do leave them in the water for a couple of minutes whilst i potter in the greenhouse. None of the plants look as though they are struggling for water and i check them a couple of times a day.

No, you're doing just fine without the interference from your mother. Women of a certain age though, will still treat you as though you are six. Get a padlock!

gawd, the temptation of a padlock! She'd only throw a mega sulk. Current record is 1 week! I couldnt cope with that! It doesnt help that i live at home still.

Perhaps explain the theory of why it is better? Show her Two Sheds video.

does she understand this? I prefer to have a dry surface because it reduces moulds, fungus, algae & fungus gnats

i have explained it, several times but she smiles, nods and it goes in one ear and out the other cos no-one knows more than she does! Its a persistant problem that affects every aspect of life, not just gardening! I'd move out but i have alot of health problems that have only started to improve in the last year and will inevitably get considerably worse again the in future. Plus here i have space and a greenhouse!

You'll have to grow a thicker skin then, or act like a duck!!
Seriously, I have the same but milder kind of problem with a much loved family member and over the years I have tried to let it not bother me. Usually it works. Just do "lalalalalalalala" in your head when she is criticising!

My mother doesn't interfere either - she's knows I know best - I've been telling her that all my life! She never argues with me either.

Mine never stopped until I managed to successfully grow on an Edgeworthia, whilst she killed hers Then and only then did she concede defeat. It still bugs her to this day
