  • Quince

    Hello forum

I have a quince fruit on my study desk here.

Are they easy to grown from seed?

    Thanks

What sort of quince is it?
A furry pear shaped one or a highly scented smaller one (japonica quince)?

What type of quince is it, ornamental or the culinary sort? Most of them need stratification to germinate and it will take a good few years to fruit if it's the latter. And large quinces (cydonia oblonga) other than Vranja are usually grafted on rootstocks. All that said I'd probably give it a go.

It's the latter I think. Resembles a very small apple in appearance.

Had it on my desk for almost a week and it's still firm and does smell rather nice.

There's this article on growing japonica from seed by Sarah Raven: How to grow: japonica - Telegraph

I like them a lot for making jelly each year - lovely wobbly spiciness. My Mum steals most of mine for spreading on her morning toast or adding to porridge.

This is really helpful - thanks!

Just need to free up some time.. I'm currently studying a diploma in Horticulture which is eating away at any fun time.

Saying that I've promised myself a jar or two come this evening!
