  • Pot size for tomato plants

    Hi,
I have loads of tomato plants that will need putting in either grow bags or but into tubs. There are the cherry type and the pear shape type.
So I was wondering what size pot is going to be best to put them in? Are they best going into a pot each or put them in individual pots?
Also what compost would you recommend for the pots?
    Thanks

One plant each to a pot about the size of a domestic bucket. If you can get hold of some Morrison cut flower buckets and pop some drainage holes in the bottom these are ideal and very cheap or in some cases free. As to the compost ordinary MPC will be fine but as with all container grown produce you will have to feed especially tomatoes.

Mine all go into 10 litre pots. I'd probably have gone a bit bigger but I've got loads of 10L hanging about !!!

I use the same buckets but get mine from the Co op (most supermarkets give them away or charge 99p for 10) but you have to ask about them.

MPC for my toms as well!

Do you mix anything in with it?

I put a little dried FYM into the mix but this only gives me a little leeway. After week 5 I start to feed with high nitrogen something like Miracle Grow to help green growth and when the first fruits appear I change to high potash like Tomorite for fruit growth.

I have some spare plants that I was going to grow in a growbag and large pots. They are in small 5" pots at the moment but are actually doing better, bigger, than those planted in my greenhouse. I have put this down to the fact that they have been standing in a tray of water when I was on holiday and this got me thinking could you grow tomatoes this way if you add tomato food to the water in a sort of hydroponics way, any thoughts?
