Hi, i was wondering if there are any vegetables (or fruits) i can plant now? Is it too late? I have thought about planting Onions and Garlic but im struggling to find any. There are so many different varietys of Garlic to, can anyone recomend a variety thats easy for first timers, thanks.

I would just grab the first garlic you find, it's pretty foolproof, even I have managed to grow some
WPC F Hobbit, Shire police -
Fruit bushes are good to plant in autumn
For the onions/garlic go have a look in your local garden centre, they are all pretty well stocked with them now.
Have a check of seed catalogues, they all have a big selection of onions and garlics. Also have a look through mail order in the GYO mag.

Fiona's quite right, my first time with garlic (think it was Solent Wight) was a great success, so trying out some different varieties this time. You should still be able to get onion sets most places, have you tried on line? You can also grow them from seed at this time of year. Have a look at what grapes are planting on "Vegging Out", there you'll find some really useful advice. Good luck and happy growing.Granny on the Game in SheffieldComment

Never had much joy with garlic from garden centres so now I just use the stuff from the supermaket! Probably frowned upon like using supermarket tatties for seed tatties...............but it has worked for me!
If i'm not paying much for the seed garlic I don't feel so agrieved if it comes to nowt.

Can you grow garlic in containers or is it best in the ground. Im due to move house soon and dont want to leave them behind!

I start most of mine off in modules/containers....the best garlic that I found is in Bramcote Shops Fruit and Veg shop in Nottingham. Marvelous crop last year and replanting it this year.

Wilkinson have Onion sets in at the moment, two pound for a bag of 50. They also have garlic, cant remember how much though. Not easy to find in store, mixed in with the display of spring bulbs.Comment

I know this sounds very thick but if you buy a bulb of garlic from the supermarket and plant the cloves i assume this will grow into another bulb of garlic? Also do you have to bury the whole thing or leave the top poking out?The best fertilizer is the gardener's shadow.Comment

One clove will produce a plant with another bulb, yes. I plant mine about half an inch under the surface, pointy end upwards.Originally posted by growingkasbar View Post

Yes, if you buy a bulb of Garlic just break it up into individual cloves when you're ready to plant. Push them into the soil pointy end upwards so the top is about an inch below the surface. thanks! So does anything from the garlic grow above soil? I imagine its kind of like an onion. And how do i tell when its ready?
