Partial shade, light shade, full sun etc?

    Partial shade, light shade, full sun etc?

    Ok now this may sound like the daftest question ever, but I am a Germinator and it's my job to ask daft questions, so here goes!

    My garden is south facing. so the middle gets sun all day but the east facing gets it until about 3pm and the west facing from about 1.30pm, because of fences, trees etc.

    My question is what is meant by partial shade, light shade, a sunny spot, full sun and every other combination that seems to be out there!

    Each part of my garden gets some sun either AM, PM or all day so what do I put where

    I think if it has the sun for more than 6 hours a day (incl midday) that's 'full sun'

      Dry Shade is what you get under privet hedges, Conifers etc, Damp shade is the same but wetter ( it's my job to give daft answers )

      Anything North facing is Shade but 45degrees either side and they will get some sunlight so is light shade.

      East thru South to West is Full Sun in my book. The only difference is that some plants are best grown on West facing walls as they have time to thaw out a bit before they get sun on them ( Camelias I found are better like this as the sudden thaw with early sun can make them drop buds).

      Examples are Peaches were grown on south facing walls where they are baked by the sun, Apples & Pears on the East & West facing Walls.

      Light shade is what you get in a mature wood, Dappled sunlight. If you need a torch it's called a Cellar
