  • Onion seed

Last q today! I can't get my act together with onion seed. I have Sturon, from Real Seeds, and reading the pack just now I see I should have sown late March. Well I didn't, and now it's late April. I've got about a squillion seeds so wasting a few is no biggie, but I wondered if the onions will still get enough of a growing season if I put them in now? I'm not looking for monster onions, big enough to cook with is fine by me.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

Onion is the only crop that I never sow late expecting it to catch-up.

Onion bulbing-up is associated with day length, so the plant is going to do it on the same day each year, regardless of when you sow.

I would cut your losses and save the seed for next year.

You would probably get away, just, with sowing Onion sets now - but I think far too late for seed.

Thanks Kristen. I had a feeling that might be the case. Next year it is.

oops! as a newbie I sowed silverskin onion seeds last week in the greenhouse. The seedlings shot out of the compost and are now a couple of inches long. It seems I may be wasting my time, but I'll let you know how I get on!

Maybe the greenhouse will do the trick Jane? I don't have one so I'm going to follow Kristen's wise advice and hold off for now. Btw I think spring onions are different and cheerfully grow all through spring and summer.
