Looks like a good site, seems to be alot of shade though, is it surrounded by trees, you may have to thin them out.

Hi MrsN
First off clear all the rubbish and surface vegetation from your site. Then take the time to look at it at various times of the day - which areas get most sunshine - are any areas heavily shaded by the trees surrounding your plot - are any big enough to keep out the rain (ground under the tree is bone dry and rock hard). Can any of these trees be removed or cut back.
Draw a wee map of the plot and mark in any of these areas. What about water supply and access to the site ?
Then take your time - little and often is the best way to start reclaiming your plot - dig over small sections, ensuring you remove all perrenial weeds and their roots as you go. Whatever you are not digging can be covered with a coloured plastic as this will help prevent weed growth too.

Using all my skill as a boy scout I guess its sort of North facing (I assume the foto was taken in the afternoon) so it should get sun for some of the day.

Like Rat says measure it out and then draw it roughly to scale on something like powerpoint on the computer then you can draw beds on it and move them around to get the best fit ( or you could do it with graph paper and coloured peices of card for the beds.

Any ways I think I'd opt for raised beds but you must squeeze a greenhouse in if at all possible it will give you loads more options to garden.
