  • Oh no - my spuds!

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum......

So I'm in my second year of growing my own veg - and it's mostly going really well (aside from problems with those darned Cabbage Whites!).

Last year I planted some potatoes which I had just bought from the supermarket and I got a really good crop - around about 100 potatoes from the 3 planted so was very happy with that.

I have read that it's always better to grow from seed potatoes as there is less risk from blight and other problems, so this year I did.

I bought some potatoes (I don't remember the variety - I just know they were early salad potatoes) from Wilkos and planted them and have recently begun harvesting, expecting to get quite a few salad potatoes.

Unfortunately each plant has provided maybe 2 small spuds and 1 HUGE potato - which I don't think is right. They all seem to be a little green in places too.

    What have I done wrong??????

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    VJ.

Hi Vampire, I am experiencing the same problem with the Rocket spuds which I planted. They taste great, but just get 1 massive spud (one fed 2 of us easily on Saturday night) then a couple of tiddlers. No idea why....

VJ - I'm assuming you did the earthing up thing and the plenty of watering thing?

      Welcome to the Vine BTW

Yup - all earthed up, watered and fed.
        But, still a craptacular crop!
I might just chuck in some fresh for Xmas and hope for the best.

        VJ.

VJ',sorry to hear about the "craptacular"(is this a new gardening term?!....love it!)crop.would have thought the greenspuds are too near the surface, perhaps a but more earthing up was required.
no answer for the unequal crop size i'm afraid.i've had some crop less than others and have the odd very large spud but never quite as few as you describe.put it down to experience and cut yourself a real big chip from the large spud as a consolation!!!!
