  • Oh 'eck....a bit of work to do.

I went to have a closer look at the plot this afternoon. I must confess I haven't seen it in a couple of years and the wilderness and a load of junk seems to have moved in and taken over.

I stood in the middle of what used to be the Veg Patch and took a vid and as you can see I have a fair bit of clearing and digging to do before I can so much as order seeds. I must fix the fence and put up a gate too, as the horses kept wandering in to see what I was doing ...Hee hee .

Anyway....here is the "Before" video. Hopefully the over the next few weeks I'll be able to show you a less "wild" view.

    Jules.

Looks like an interesting project Jules. Lots to do but it should be good fun doing it. If your having the kind of weather we're having here in Notts. I hope it soon improves or you'll not get much chance to be out there tackling your jungle.

    Have fun.

Most of us have to make do with a deck chair or a bench of some sorts, but it looks like you've got a blummin 3 piece suite! Get you posh-oh.

Plenty to crack on with - good luck.

It looks like a good sized plot though. As Lancelot Brown said, it has great capabilities! Look forward to follow-up video.

Well so far, although no actual work on the plot has started, I have got myself a spade, a fork, a wheelbarrow, some thick leather gardening gloves (looks like I'll be needing them for the brambles) and I've recruited the help of 2 strapping teenage boys (my own I hasten to add ). I'm thinking I'll probably need a saw of some description too, as several of the trees (which I think were Plum) look as if they have died, so will probably need removing.

I've decided I'm going to grow the real basics (read whatever is easiest to grow) this year, so I'm thinking Carrots, Potatoes, Onions, Runner Beans and anything else that I think will survive my inept attempts at producing something edible. Does that sound about right for a complete beginner?

I would eventually like to have a Herb Garden too but I don't want to get too ambitious just yet.

I shall be picking brains for the most hardy of varieties to grow at a later stage (so be warned )

                Jules.

Just a thought, you could possibly use the dead trees to grow mushrooms. I'm no expert but I think it depends on the state of the wood. I'm trying with a couple of logs from an old tree at the moment (no results yet).

Looks like a bonfire party is on the cards?
It might be worth while hiring a strimmer for the day, get all the junk piled up for a fire, strim everything else. Then you can plan what you'll have where, cover up what you're not digging, and then get started! If the digging seems to be going a bit slow, remember you can plant potatoes and other things through weed suppressant membrane/thick cardboard in the spring
