  • no eggs for weeks

    hi all,

carmen and miranda have not laid eggs for weeks. carmen often had probs with laying as sometimes one would break inside her (sometimes she would lay normally) (huge speckledy hen). miranda always good layer but has been on the moult (nearly finished now). do they go through periods when they dont lay at all? last year (first year i had them they laid all through winter, not every day but on and off) any views?

You might be better off in Rule the Roost Angela!
Sorry,I've no idea, although I think it's common for them to lay right through the winter in their first year & then future years slow down.

I've boosted their calcium intake so they've no excuses!!!

It's quite usual for the chooks to stop laying when they moult. Growing new feathers takes a tremendous amount of energy and is diverted from egg laying. It's a good idea to add a booster supplement such as Poultry Spice to their food during this time.

Chooks also go off lay for a while when the days are shorter so they may not start laying until after Christmas.

I don't know what remedies could help your other chook. Might be best to ask on Rule the Roost.
