    Let me run this by you

    Despite being a profesional ornamental gardener for 28 years, i've only briefly grown veg when i was a kid (aged 12 ish)

    Now, i have a small plot approx 12 x 6 feet. I will have an 8 x 6 greenhouse. I have some 6 x 6 trellice and a bit of fence probably 6 foot long. Other than that, i have copious amounts of room to grow things in tubs.

    Now the plan is to grow onions, iceberg lettuce, sprouts, sweetcorn and maybe some raspberry canes in the 12 x 6 plot.

    Runner beans against the trellice and green beans against the fence.

    New and maincrop potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beetroot in tubs.

    Toms, cues and peppers in the GH

    Strawberries and/or trailing toms in baskets

    What do you think....

    I'd love your opinions and help. Slightly chalky soil but also has some beautiful loam. Garden gets summer sun nearly all day in summer despite north east facing.

    Andy, I've moved you out of Growing Techniques because that's primarily an Archive board. I've put you in New Shoots as you are new to the veg growing bit, and the advice might be useful to other new growers.

          Thanks Pies. I looked cos I can only use builders ton bags and haven't really grown much veg either, so that link has given me some good ideas.

          Andy sounds nice, personally I would try dwarf french/green beans in a tub (grown them, they do fine) and grow a cordon fruit tree against the wall, cos I love fruit, with the runner beans against the fence.

            Don't forget that with climbing beans you still need canes for them to climb, even when they have a fence/trellis as they curl around the support rather than climb it. My Dad tried growing Runner beans up a trellis which was attached to a wall, they basically didn't want to know and carpeted the ground around them instead (commercially grown runner beans are grown as ground covering plants, as farmers can't mess about with supports, it's why they're often muddy). The RHS at Harlow Carr have grown veg in a small space and, I believe, managed to grow enough to feed a family of four. They did this largely by having plants in pots, ready to go in as soon as the previous crop was finished.
            Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
