  • how to spot carrot and beetroot seedlings from weeds

ok, probably a dumb question, but I planted 2 rows of beetroot and 1 of carrot in my greenhouse 2 weeks ago and there are seedlings coming through. Unfortunately, there's millions of them!!!

I can sort of spot straight lines in some places, but other than that how can I spot the veg seedlings from the weeds!!??

Carrots...2 long seed leaves and then feathered leaves
Beetroot, 2 seed leaves and then reddish stems on the leaves.

google 'carrot seedling' and 'beetroot seedling' on google images and it will show you some.

I've attached a pic of my carrot seedlings from last year, haven't taken any of beetroot yet, but they are definitely very purpley red in colour!

Why would you have weed seeds in your greenhouse? What compost did you use?

I inherited the greenhouse when I moved hear 2 years ago. Up until now I've just dug in multipurpose B&Q compost, but now you mention it, I've no idea how long the previous owners were using the same soil.
Do you reckon I should remove a lot of it and replace it with new? If so, what should I replace it with?

Oh right - you've got borders inside your greenhouse, I get it.
yes, I would turn it out and put fresh in. (a mix of loam, multi-purpose, well-rotted manure, well-rotted compost etc)

New to this game but have managed to sort the beet and carrots from the weed however i weeded my parsnips the other day and transplanted the few that germinated into 2 rows. My lottie neighbour came along and commented on the 2 extremely neat and well cared for rows of groundsel i had cultivated! Oops. Luckily have some more but not easy to tell them all apart!!! Live and learn!
