  • How soon can I move seedlings to greenhouse?

    Hi
I have loads of tomato, chilli and pepper seedlings on my windowsills. When would it be okay to move them to an unheated greenhouse, so I can free up some space?

None of them like the cold, so especially with the weather forecast to be down to freezing in parts for the next couple of weeks, I think you'd better keep them inside. The minimum growing temp is 10C I think, but they would probably survive a little colder, covered with fleece at night. That's not saying they would be happy. I don't usually put mine out in the unheated greenhouse until April, depending on the weather.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Mine is unheated. I only put the plants in there in the day until mid May. We get late frosts here and the greenhouse can go down to minus levels overnight. At that stage, with big, well grown plants, it's heartbreaking to lose them.

It's up to you - I play safe and give them the light during the day and bring them into the house at night. The dining room table is out of action in the evenings from mid-March to mid-May here!

Only thing I have in my greenhouse, (on advice from grapes) is leeks, spring onions and salad.

Like others I wouldn't put them out yet but mine are all pretty tiny yet anway and are still in their original seed pots. They'll be potted on this weekend but kept inside for a while. The only things I have in the cold greenhouse at the moment are some shallots, leeks and peas. Oh and some broad beans are there part time but they're going to be planted out next week as soon as I've dug the bed over ready for them.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
