  • How long do leeks take to germinate?

hi all just wondering how long leeks take to germinate? and once germinated how long until planting out? Oh and what the best way of planting out (puddleing in)

Germination was a little while for me - nearly 2 weeks before anything showed through and it took another 2 weeks or so before all the shoots were through.

I have mine in a large pot for the past 3 weeks (they having been too cramped in a small pot for about 2 months before that) and I expect to plant them in about 6-8 weeks time when the first spuds come up.

Idealy you plant out leeks when they are about the size of a pencil. Make a deep holes with a broom handle or the like about 6 ins apart, drop the leek in then fill the hole with water which will wash some soil down over the roots and its done. The hole will give you a longer blanched stem but you will have to dig deep to lift them.
