  • Help identifying mystery plant!

    Hi!

I was digging around in my border today and found these lovely little red shoots coming through under some gravel! We have only just move into the house and I have no idea what they are!

I have attached a couple of pictures, any ideas anyone?!

Not easy to tell at this stage, but they could be young buds of a peony plant - would need the buds to grow into leaves before you can really identify them.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Definitely look like a proper plant. I would wait and see. If you like it fine, if you don't then dig it up.

Hi as Jeanied said they need to be a bit bigger really. If they are in a place where they could get knocked over or forgotton I would put a barrier round them for protection and wait and see what happens. You could be in for a lovely surprise.

Looks like emerging shoots of a lily to me - and the stems look right for old lily stems too

They look just like paeony, exactly like the one we've got coming up. It should be lovely!

I'm with Jeanied, looks a bit like a peony to me too - the only thing I would say is that mine has more shoots than that (perhaps it is a bit more established) If I remember, I will take a picture of mine tomorrow for comparison.

Thanks a lot for all your messages, any of those things would be lovely! I'm really looking forward to seeing what they are, I just want everything in my garden to grow faster! Doing veggies for the first time and getting v impatient!

OK, I know, it's a bit later than tomorrow but here is my peony for comparison.

I think its an emerging lily. Mine are looking exactly like the picture.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

                      Scarey,

Thanks for the brill photo! Had a look at the buds this morning and the tops are starting to open up just like in your picture! I think the mystery maybe solved!
