  • Fruity seeds!!!

Not sure if this should be here or on general chit chat but anyways.

My DS has gone seed mad anything that has a seed in needs to be set.

So what fruit/ veg have grapes grown and was it sucessful.

I've done old potatoes and an orange tree when i was little. But would like to know if anyone done anything with say an avocado or pineapple top. Did they fruit or did they just make a nice looking plant.

Grown a few avocados... successful yes, but I get fed up with them eventually...take too much space and they get lanky.

    Tangerine...for YEARS we grew it...never a fruit...composted!!

    Pineapple top went mouldy...no success

I've grown Toms peppers chilies etc. all easy

peas and beans from dried (never myself but heard of it)

A raspberry from one just chucked in the border...suprised me...

Apples are possible but a lot of effort if you don't know what you'll get.

Ginger...easy to start....more challanging to get a usable root.

Would like to try a kiwi...passion fruit might work I think.

I save seeds from my own crops

Most seeds want to grow but with all the tropical /tender stuff from supermarkets may be interesting to try and sprout but unless you have a huge heated conservatory eventually IMHO pointless.

We grew a melon (inside) last year and I'm doing tesco peppers this year. Aubergines didn't work - I think because they have to over ripen on the plant for the seed to develop to sowing stage.

That's interesting. I have a load of melon seed I saved from one I grew a few years ago.(ex F1 sweetheart)... I wonder if they'll germinate....I was a bit worried about them crossing with a cucumber at the time!!!....yuk!...might give em a go. I think you might be best to pick a melon variety suited to glasshouses in this country anyway.

I've planted the seeds from a very tasty Honeydew, and at the moment, have a lot of plants coming through, will be interesting to see if any of them fruit. If they continue growing as they are I'll probably have some plants to post out to any interested grapes.

Did it when I was little with an apple seed, but got bored by the time it sprouted so guess it was thrown out....

I grew a mango seed when I was a kid. It was a baby plant for awhile but I guess it must have keeled over eventually.

Have planted far too many melon seeds now but it keeps DS happy. Nearly ended up with a pineapple top as well but past up the pleasure.
Do they grow like squashes and ramble about or are they climbers?? Have a cold frame they can go in later on. I think i might be getting a little a head of myself but what the heck.

I grow my melon up. They are like a squash but smaller leaves/thinner stem:

I once did this with a group of students to get them to really think about seeds, we grew all kinds of fruit seeds and pips, various spices, grains and pulses, many into mature plants.
Citrus and dates made quite decorative plants, coriander, fenugreek, cumin were all usable and it was interesting to see lentils growing
OneI haven't tried but rather fancy is a Lychee - anyone grown them?

                      I've got a peach/nectarine tree that sprouted in the compost,I re-potted it, now it's 6ft tall.
