  • cumbers - climb or scrawm?

Hi all - I plan to put my cucumbers out this weekend in very large pots. What's the best plan for a frame and is there a preference for them to climb, or scrawm (old Yorkshire word for creep along the ground)please? My OH never does it himself (if you'll pardon the expression) and I'm no carpenter. I had wondered about a 3 tier concertina clothes horse I could maybe put in front of the pots for the cucumbers to climb over to keep the fruit off the ground, or whether to build some kind of frame with canes and string? What do you think?

I always support mine against a fence or for greenhouse ones I have a series of wires supported off the frame. A lot of people I know let outside ones sprawl everywhere which has the advantage of being zero effort and leaves them safe from winds. However you do run the risk of slug damage and I never seem to have that much horizontal space.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

      Hi
I grow mine in pots up a tall cane, if needed I add a second cane for extra support.

My rotary washing line buckled under the strain last week, and I was just about to put it with the rubbish when I realised that turned upside down and only partialy opened it'll be a perfect growing frame for my cues. I'm so excited, I feel sick!

I was chuckling so much I forgot to ask....

In a greenhouse are there things you can suspend wires on for cucumbers or am I dreaming of something that don't exist?

Hi Mr D, There is - I bought some last week -you should be able to get some from Wilkinsons etc. They fit into the ridge bit and twist in place. Hope that makes sense.

i usually grow cucumbers in a grow bag and netting to grow up.but this year im going to try growing them in the allotment. i am putting black weed covering down and will grow them through the covering which should keep the fruit from damage. thats the theory anyway.
a good put down line to use !
