  • cucumber help please

    Hi,
I am new to gardening so will be asking loads of questions, so i hope you dont mind.

I have grown some cucumbers from seeds and now it time to plant them in containers, now the thing is i have read that they need to grow up on a trellis or a frame of some sort, but how do i do that when im going to put them in morrisons flower buckets.

Indoor cucumbers grow fast and will need to grow up a support, so in a greenhouse you can string wire across the frames. Outdoor cucumbers are happy enough spreading along the ground.

If they are outside, are they on a patio or grass/soil? If the latter you could put a cane either side of the pot, one across the top for stability then just fasten some string between the canes or put more canes in the middle. That was a long winded answer for basically saying, try making a trellis.....

Me I just stick a cane in the pot and tie them to it as they grow, just like cordon toms.

Thats what Ive done and it seems to be working ok. Mine are just using the string I tie them up with to cling on to.
How tall are indoor cukes supposed to get?? I have one on the bathroom windowsill that has gone up and halfway along the window and I dont think it will let me train it back down again!!LOL

I think you can say "how long is a piece of string?" as an answer to that one!

KG I grow Baribal. On a good year it will grow up a 6ft cane and then along a string in the green house roof for an other 6ft.

Good luck on a bathroom window sill.

Hmmm, maybe I can put up more string and train it back and forth down the window!! (it was just my back up cuke in case the blowaway ones failed but I got attached to it........he's called Trevor and is now my lucky mascot.)

Does everyone give their cucumber's names?

Probably not but I heard they were sensitive souls prone to suicide so I thought I would give Trevor some extra TLC and see if he does better then the poor nameless cukes in the blowawy!!
(if he grows the best then next year I shall name them all.......and grow them on the bathroom windowsill!LOL)

I'm exactly the same as you susan, first year trying Cukes.
i started mine out indoors and when it got to big for inside i planted it in an unheated mobile green house, the problem i then had is that it out grew that to.
All my plants are containers because i have no garden only a small yard. i made my own trellis from string to start with but then went out and bought a small wooden trellis from the pound shop and stuck it on my fence and attached it to that, it is now thriving despite the weather beeing crap she seems to be holding her own. unfortunately her sibblings died but i think thats because i put them on the balcony where it was to windy for them.
