Confused about soil

    Confused about soil

    This is probably something simple but i grow most things in containers (have to) and was reading recently about different composts, soil based and soil less is confusing me what is the difference?

    Also if i grow something in a container and intend for it to be in there for more than one season what compost is best?

    Is John Innes no 3 a soil based compost?

      I find some of the advantages of soil based compost are it's cheaper if you make your own, it's heavier, so pots don't get blown over, it needs less watering,it needs less feeding and it's traditional!

        And you can be 'peat-free' and all environmentally friendly and still have a compost that actually works, unlike many of the composts marketed as peat free that are often fairly useless, look and feel like composted wood, smell of vinegar in the first season and of hydrogen sulphide if you've any left in the bag for a second season. I don't make my own John Innes though, my soil is carrying far too much of a weed seed burden.
