Stoopid question time with apologies, I have been chitting my first earlies for a couple of weeks now in a double glazed but unheated conservatory, I guess night time temperatures can get down to perhaps 3 degrees. My stupid question is do these (photo) look temperature affected and are they ok ? Not only are these first earlies, they are first evers !!!!!!! advice appreciated.

If the forecast shows any really cold nights - bring them indoors overnight, or cover them with fleece, polysheet or newspapers, just to insulate them a bit.

Have a similar related question so I will hop onto this thread.

Is it OK to chit my potatoes in my bedroom? They are out of direct sunlight and it does get a little warm if I keep the door shut.

Also is it OK for a few potatoes to touch (less than 1/8th of the surface) - I have tried to keep them not from touching to prevent any possible mould whilst they are in the egg cartons/plastic trays.

                      Many thanks,

                      Samuel

If they are too dark the shoots will grow long. If they are too warm the tubers will shrivel. If either of these starts to happen, move them somewhere lighter / cooler (depending).

They shouldn't go mouldy unless they are diseased and start to rot. In real life they'll happily spend months in cold wet ground. The only problem with keeping them touching is if one goes bad it can spread more easily to the ones next to it. But if you're keeping an eye on them that won't happen anyway.

I echo Martins' reply. They need somewhere cool & light, don't worry about them touching as they may well have stayed in a net bag for weeks had you not bought them.
