  • Chilli seedlings - worried!

    Hi all

Hope you can help me out here - Ive grown three varieties of chillis from a kit that was bought for me and had more success with them than previous kits that were bought for me.

They are Jalepeno, Firecracker and Hungarian Hot Wax. The hungarian hotwaxes have shot right up and I am very proud of them so far. Anyway I grew 8 or 9 in each terracotta pot that came with the kit and the compost they came in and showed a neighbour who is much more experienced in gardening than me and agreed it was time to pot on. She gave me some of these peat pots to repot them in and I also bought a big bag of multipurpose compost for them. I was very careful repotting them and using smaller peat pots for the smaller seedlings and larger peatpots for the bigger ones. Ive put them on a tray and in my conservatory but Im getting worried about them and Im not sure if its the compost Ive bought that isnt any good or if its the environment but all of them unfortunately seem to be going a very pale green and any new leaves further down the stems grow but go yellow and stay very thin then are dropping off. I read other threads and do you think they might be too hot? And do I have to keep the compost moist like I did when they were in the terracotta pots? Because Ive been letting the compost get bone dry as my neighbour thinks i could be overwatering them but then some of them started to droop badly and shrivel so I watered them from the top and it looks like I might have saved them from the brink as theyve come back but Im still worried about their paleness - they were a much richer green before repotting them. Ive tried watering them from below and above as well. I will attach some photos so you can see whats happening

Any advice would be really appreciated - Ive never got this far before and dont want to loose them

    Thanks
    Jimbo

Seems I cant edit posts or post attachments lol The 3 varieties are Habanero (not Jalepeno), Hungarian Hotwax and Firecracker.

Hopefully someone can offer some helpful hints without seeing pictures.

How big are the peat pots they’re in? These types of pots make the compost dry out quicker, could the whole thing be planted into a larger pot?

          Hi Jimbo
          Welcome to the vine.
First thoughts is over watering. A bit more info will help.
Couple of questions. What size are the seedling ?
          Are you feeding them?
What size pots are they in?

MPS ( multi purpose compost ) is fine for chillies. That's what I grow mine in and they do ok.

You need to make a few more posts before you can add photos and stuff, I think.

I would say you need bigger pots and keep them well watered as per before you neighbours advice. i know often people say to keep chillies on the dry side but these are young plants and they won't grow well with keeping them dry especially in the heat we have been having. Keep them on the dry side when the plants are loaded with fruit and you want to crop them.

Also peat pots are difficult to control watering, personally I would ditch them and get some plastic ones instead.

Thank you so much - I will give all that a go - my phone camera doesnt really do it justice - to be honest they look much greener on the photos than they actually are I know its been really hot here in UK too...

Do you think i should also move the smaller plants into bigger plastic pots too? My neighbour advised me that i could just put the whole thing including the peatpot into a bigger pot once they had grown some more (some of her plants admittedly not chillis have roots all over the peatpot! ) ... I think she also said that putting them into too big a pot could kill them as too much room is a bad thing???

Mine go from a tiny pot into a 5litre pot and then straight into the biggest pot I have. If they are small growing varieties I will pot on into an appropriate size but habs will grow very big. So put them into a pot that you have room for. I don’t like peat pots / I know people use them and plant them on but I really think they dry out and cause problems - why don’t you try half and half?

Shock of transplant can cause leaf drop, keep them somewhere cooler for a day or two after potting on to recover.

i will do that - good idea - ive got plenty enough to try half and half.

Is it ok to put more than one plant in one pot when I put them into bigger pots or would you say keep 1 plant per pot?

                        One plant per pot.
Like Scarlet said they get big.

This is in a 20lt pot. One plant. Just so you get the idea. It's about 4 1/2 ft tall not including the pot.

Hi Jim I planted into those peat pots and mine seemed to be stalled and stoped growing! I potted on into fresh MPC in larger pots ,I soaked the peat pots and peeled them off the roots, it looked like they where strugling to get through the wall of the pots and I don't think it would be any good putting them into pots to decompose, but my runner beans where ok , iv'e done as Scarlet said and potted into very large pots ! atb Dal.

                            Jimbo,

How much space do you have? Measure it and allow about 600mm x 600mm minimum per plant. Then select your best plants (2 or 3 of each variety) v- or how many you have space for. Re-pot them in to proper pots and see how they get on. The heat will warm the soil without drying them out as fast as peat pots and encourage growth.

Remember - We all plant more seeds than we need and have to compost some plants.
Check compost bag to see if there is any fertilizer in it. If not, you will have to feed plants sooner.

                            All best.

There is always the option of offering your unwanted plants to friends, family, neighbours or work colleagues.
