  • Broken Glass

In one corner of our plot we have an area about 5'x4' totally covered with broken glass, i.e. old broken bottles and glass house panes, both on top of and in the soil. in addition there are rabbit holes in the area, plus an small old shed, which I would prefer to pull down, which has been seen to have rats coming out of.

I am not entirely sure of what to do with this area, but to put compost bins on it. Any suggestions as to what this soil could be used for would be appreciated.

Oh ..I would just sit down on a mat with a bucket , trowel and a pair of gloves...in the sunshine and take some 'time out' just picking slowly through the area. Could be a very theraputic area to clear if you take it gently! No hurry...it will be there later if you don't fancy doing it just yet!!

Pick off all the visible glass from the surface first.
Wear good leather gloves and some sort of bucket for the glass.

Work your way methodically through the area a square foot at a time, fork gently, then spade into a riddle over a wheelbarrow and riddle the soil through, pick out any bits of glass. Given the area involved a trowel and hand fork may be a better bet. Once the barrow is full empty it off the affected area, but close by.

Get a finer riddle and reverse the process, putting the soil back where it came from.

To finish use a mantis (or similar) as it should turn any remaining bits into something resembling sand.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

Hiya! My whole allotment is covered with bits of glass in the ground. If I didn't choose to use any site that had glass, I wouldn't be able to use any part of my allotment. Best advice is if you need the ground, just be patient and pick the glass carefully and put it in a sturdy rubbish bag.

you could always put another shed or greenhouse on the area with a slab base if it is that bad, and save you time cleaning the area.
