    broad beans.

    hi

    We are new to growing vegies so please bear with us!!

    We planted board beans,onions and garlic about 3 weeks ago, they have all pushed though. But can you guys help us with a few questions?
    * Do we have to canes for the board beans they are about 2-3" tall now?
    * Do we have to feed the onions etc at any time?

    I don't grow broadies over winter, but they are fairly robust & so they should be ok without protection or staking. If winter is looking to be a nasty one, though, you could cover them with fleece, but generally they should come through the bad weather with few losses.

    My overwintering onion bed got a couple of handfuls of growmore before planting, but I wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't to hand. I'd suggest that you feed them in spring when they start putting on growth.

      but you'll need to stake the beans in the spring - as they will grow tall and heavy eventually!

        I tend to put canes in round the outside and sort of fence them all in with string to stop them falling all over the paths but let them lean up against each other.

        Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

        Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

          like Alison says. I've found the best thing is not to sow too early in autumn, and to avoid a windy spot.

            I didn't stake my broadies, 1st time growing and they snapped under their weight. My onions were watered only by what rain we got in winter, trying to help the drought, and they were a great crop so they musnt need too much care.
