Someone on our allotment site saw a squirrel pulling up broadies last year. I think it would be a huge effort for a mouse toi lift a 2" bean with its roots.

Yup, sounds like squirrels to me - they uprooted every one of the Busy Lizzies I planted for my mum last year! Every visit I was pushing 'em back into the ground. I think they just did it so they could sit in the trees and laugh at me! 'Course, you may have a "Super Mouse". Look out for a mouse in blue tights with his red underpants on over the top. I'll probably be him...

You mean like this? Older Grapes may know him as 'Mighty Mouse', though he was originally called 'Super Mouse'
