  • Bramley Apple Tree

Arghhh! Put grease band on tree a couple of years back and thought perhaps I should remove it yesterday. Well, underneath was dark brown trunk with fungusy stuff. Doesn’t smell. Have I broken it? It has not fruited particularly well but I thought this was because it was getting established. Has lots of lovely blossom this year though. Any advice would be appreciated. By the way, I have a Grenadier cooking apple tree and every year it produces kilos of apples.

Your tree should be fine - all that has happened most likely is that the normal bark has developed differently because of the band keeping the surface wet - just take it off and I reckon the tree will be OK.

If you want to post a photo, I ought to be able to be more certain of whether there is a possible problem or not - fruit trees do need some years to start cropping properly - as a rule of thumb the larger the tree will ultimately be, the longer it takes - so in the old days with 50' high apple trees, it could take 20 years for them to produce a maximum crop.

          I guessed that anyway :-)

There is some advice here on posting photos - but I really don't think there's anything much for you to worry about.

I occasionally get deer damage to the bark on my trees and have bandaged them up with old bin bags or whatever - the bark looks really weird when you take the plastic off sometimes, but the trees seem OK.

              Bramley Apple Tree

Hi. My Bramley is looking poorly. Plenty of fruit. Some scabby and brown leaves. Have been watering it and have dug an 18 inch circle around it. It’s in the lawn. Any advice please? Tried to pay photo but upload failed.

Holly, I've merged your post with your other thread about your Bramley in case the information is relevant.
Your upload has failed because the image is too big. If they're on your phone, try this https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...one_94345.html

Some of my apple trees have brown, spotty leaves - I pick them off if I can reach, otherwise I don't worry about them.

Failed? What was your error message?
Upload to this first to reduce your image size and then try again - it's quicker than it sounds

Or email the photo to yourself....this will also reduce image size

might be something or nothing - bit more info needed to make a reasonable guess - ie how old is the tree ?, how big ?, has it got healthy leaves as well as the others ? + anything-else which might be relevant.

The tree is about five years old. We’ve only had a couple of apples from it. The tree is not large. About seven ft high. It has some healthy leaves. It has never looked really healthy. We bought it from a good reputable seller. It had black fly/aphids a few weeks ago so we sprayed it with Bugclear. Hope this gives enough info. Thanks.
