  • is it boxing day to sow onion seeds or just sets?

I was just wondering. I do have some seeds to have a go with. I only planted sets this year and did them in late feb, and they did good.

Is it worth planting seeds late december?

2 years ago i sowed my Onion seeds on Boxing day and they did great, this year i did them just after new years day, and they did great.

It's a matter of choice and time really, unless you really need to get away from the festivities.

It's just an 'aid to memory' for when you sowed them. Usually it's the show onions like Kelsae and Robinson's Mammoth that are started this early!

It's also helpful in staggering the use of your propagator by sowing stuff at regular intervals and moving plants on once germinated!

              For onions, 29th or 31st.

I'll be doing a thread on that day anyway. Open to all.

Very new to this but have found a packet of onion seeds so want to have a go at growing from seed. My question is do they need to be somewhere warm such as indoors on the windowsill or can they go in the cold frame on the lottie?

I always start off with some warmth to aid germination, harden off after pricking out into individual pots.Cold frame about March time works for me
