  • Alternatives ways to store water without buying a water butt?

    Evening all,

I am looking into get a water butt (or a few) for my allotment but I am not inclined to pay out for something that easily eclipse my rental costs for a year.

So I was wondering if there is any way to store water without buying a water butt (or maybe a place to buy them cheaply?).

I know one can get around not buying a composter and making one using pallets, so I was wandering if there is anyway I could get my hands on something which will act as a water butt but will not come with a hefty price tag?

Also any ideas on how to make/items one can use to act as a leaf mould composter?

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

Blue plastic barrels, metal drums(check what the contents were in both), dustbins, old wheely bins.

In addition to BM's suggestions, check with your local council and water board. They may offer water butts at a subsidised price.
Look and ask on Freecycle/Freegle/Gumtree - you never know

In addition to BM's trusty advice, you may be lucky enough to get hold of an IBC, again check its original contents.

Blue barrels are hard to get hold of round here. IBC are available for about 25-30 quid but if you can't borrow a trailer then the cost of delivery will be the same again.

ebay is a good place to start.

I did read about making a concrete lined pit to store water in but it sounds a lot more effort than borrowing a trailer and getting an ibc.

Old chest freezers are watertight. See if anyone is freecycling one, or try the local scrap merchants/tip.

What about a old boat, they come with a trailer and are water tight.

what about using pallets, where the gaps are,put other strips of wood over, the idea is to have a strong wooden container,i would put a floor in as well, after you have sited it,line with some of that very heavy black plastic, bring it up and over, secure on the out sides, suggest batons, this should hold water, you could also make a lid for it,even if it's in 2 or 3 bits,so you not have to have 1 big heavy thing, now why did that just pop in my head whilst reading your post,

Wise words. An uncovered butt, regular or irregular, is going to be a death trap for anything that falls in (bird, cat, child ...) so always have something covering the top.

An uncovered butt would be a shock for anyone ( sorry couldn't resist it.)
