  • Things you understand when you garden

I was musing on the train this morning about this. All the dates in our calendar are influenced by our earlier agrarian society.

Why are there so many bank holidays in spring - because that's when the first busy period of the growing year is.

Why do we have summer sports? That's when the crops are growing and everyone has a bit of spare time.

Why we wear hats. The one time i don't and i get utterly rained on.

That we rarely get the weather the garden wants - when it wants it.

That the very day the weather is good enough you'll have something else planned. Which leads to, if you take your raincoat it won't rain, if you don't it will.

That after years of giving courgettes and runner beans away to everybody & anybody, the year you only plant a few they won't do well.

That vegetables don't just sit there indefinitely waiting to be picked when you fancy them.

That other living things enjoy your garden as much as you do - and they eat when they're hungry too. A garden devoid of "pests" is not possible. Accept them and live with them -they have rights too.

To accept failures and learn from them.
Not to be down hearted - there's always a bright side.

Gardening is very much like life. They both have good times and bad, friends and enemies, both need patience, experience and a degree of hard work to reap the benefits, a time to rest, and that if you care for it, it will care for you tenfold.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!
