Melon-pear has anyone grown this ?

This year I planted melon-pear which I know from growing up in darkest Peru (although I never saw it actually growing there). Only one seed germinated but it grew well into a smallish shrub in my greehouse which now has about 8-10 fruits about the size of a plum. They should be at least twice that size and be yellow with a purple stripe. Mine are still green. I read on the web that they are perennial shrubs so I am hoping to overwinter in the greenhouse and consequently have a better chance of ripening fruit next year although the poor thing seems to have powdery mildew from the cucumbers. I got the seeds from Simpsons I think and I see that Thompson and Morgan have them in their catalogue this year.
The flavour is pleasant although not outstanding. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has tried to grow this and what their experiences were.
