    Water butt pump?

    I have several of those big blue storage containers that I use for water butts.
    I've just cut the tops of and I dip a watering can in to get the water.
    This is quite heavy work and when it's really raining - like today - it would be great if I could empty the whole butt quickly on the green house floor.

    Any ideas? A small pump would be fab (I don't want it to be pricey!). I don't want to put a tap on them.

    I've got one of these. Very useful, as well as waterbuts, we used it to recycle bathwater last summer. And for pond filling purposes.

      I remember once, a long time ago I had a small pump that fitted into a drill. You connected one side of the pump to a hose that went into the tank (butt) from where it pumped and the other side of the pump to a hose that went to the receptacle that was catching the water. You could fit the pump into the chuck in a drill where the bit goes. There were no battery drills when I owned the pump but I can't think of any reason you couldn't use one if you don't have mains power. We used it on our boat.

        A water pump from a caravan powered by a car battery is an option I've seen used on the allotment

          I thought I'd seen one of those! My OH's Dad has a boat many moons ago....I may have seen it then.

            Thank you - I'd love to know how to save my boys shower water! One of them was in there for 20 mins earlier before I threatened to go in

                  I've seen one like this used to pump water out of a blue barrel and pump it along way up the garden into another water butt that was empty.
                  Obviously, needs electric to work!!

                      Those kind of pumps are really quite powerful. I've used a taller one, probably twice the height of the one that VC linked, and it was very, very efficient. Noisy but very efficient.

                        We use a bilge pump that are designed for boats. 12v very efficient and pumps at a much higher rate for less amps than caravan pumps, also cheap. Am@zon or eBay sell lots of types.

                        We run ours off a leisure battery connected to a solar panel on our allotment.

                          Living in the sticks I use one of these to pump out a grease trap and other things. Works a treat!!!! Doesn’t clog and will deal with dirty water ie ponds.

                            I have 2 suggestions (1) I have seen ALDI and Lidl both advertise these in the past, in fact I think they had them about 2 -3 weeks ago. (2) if you had an old garden fountain then you could salvage the pump from it, They can generally be submersible
