  • Blackberries, chard and... well...!!

So my boss and bossboss have asked to try chard out, so I went home, got a few bags and boxes and the dog and took a brisk walk up to the allotment. Forecast said thunder but the sky looked fairly clear. I took the chance
I got up there, picked a couple of bags of chard and kale, and a box and a half of blackberries. I started walking back to the site entrance as it had started raining very finely, and I heard a few rumbles...... and that is when it happened!! A huge row of blackberries, large, black, shiny, juicy blackberries. Well I had room for a few more in my tubs so stopped and started picking!!
Then..... the heavens absolutely opened and I was hammered by torrential rain and I couldn't even see the opposite plot through the rain!! I put the box down, grabbed a plastic bag and held it over my head, as if that was gonna do any good, slowly backing into the hedge for shelter. I could feel a river down the back, literally going in between my cheeks haha I couldn't see a thing through my glasses and the dog was stood with her head stuck into the hedge haha
That's what I get for being greedy!!

At least you won't have to wash them when you get home!
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

I went on a 6+ mile summer bike ride once and stopped at a pub for lunch, on the way back the heavens opened and as I looked down I could see the rain coming back up out of my boots as they over-flowed while I was pedaling - wouldn't have got any wetter by jumping in the river :-)

Do you not have a hair drier in your plot shed? ;-)

haha I heard someone on a plot nearby making the same ooh ahh noises as I did when it started heaving it down. It made me giggle and the whole thing was funny to be honest. I was soaked. People drove past me staring, so I must have looked a fright lol

No hairdryer, and I was already on my way home when the heavens opened

I'm used to it. I leave work, sky opens, I get home just in time for it to stop and the sun to come out again.
I once turned up to collect my son in a blizzard, having stopped first to check out a charity shop; my entire front was covered in snow! His dad fell about laughing. Not helpful.....!

our local branch of the NVS had an eevening outing a few years back to an organic vegetable growers set up. It started dry but it got progressively wetter. I donned a large high viz jacket with a hood. The jacket has mahoosive pockets and I remember to this day having to bail them out several times. My cheeks were kept dry but my wellies also filled up. Somehow it wasn't a disaster in fact it was a bit of a hoot.

The only consolation to getting wet at this time of year is that it's fairly warm rain.
A couple of weeks ago we walked up to the plot to water about 7:30pm, they sky was a bit grey and there was advise it might shower at sometime overnight. As we got by the gate the only other plot holder in sight was just driving off. He said it looked like rain although he'd just watered as we planned to do. We agreed it was no good banking on a decent rain, we get little enough anyway, and on we went.
We unlocked the shed, got out the watering cans and before we'd emptied the first fill the spots came down and rapidly turned to a decent rain. I told Carol to shelter in the shed while I ensured the seeds and tomatoes etc. got a decent drink. 20 Mins later it was still a substantial shower so we decided to walk home. It the warm evening air it wasn't unplesent, but we got drenched. As it turned out the rain carried on for a good few hours that night and we needn't have bothered. I'm blessed with 20/20 hindsight! Luckily there is no photographic evidence, so I will deny all knowledge. ;-)

I always say, if you want it to rain, go and water your plants....
