  • Potato marked for destruction - slugs

It's been boggy down South over the last few weeks and slugs are starting to proliferate.
There's quite a lot of slug damage, but in honesty it's the first time I've had it so badly on my potatoes.. of all things.

The photos show the destroyed potato plant on the left sitting next to a perfectly healthy and almost untouched potato plant of a different variety on the right.

The likely cause of this damage is the proximity of the potatoes to a pile of weeds and manure and an uncut section of grass which is great habit for slugs to hide.

There's a rhubarb sitting right next to the healthy potato and I'm wondering if that offered a bit of protection from the ravenous slugs.

I'm also curious to know whether the destroyed potato was suffering from an especially weak immune system - perhaps a co-factor in it's demise..

    Thanks for reading

What goes on above soil level might not reflect on the final below soil crop!
Be interested to see the comparison of final weight of crop produced!

Last year I had one variety that was decimated by slugs. Charlotte's planted right next to them in same environment were totally fine. Slug resistant variety does make a big difference. Who'd a thunk a slug would care!!

by contrast, I've had one of my least slug-molested years to date...

maybe the slugs have all moved en masse...?

Maris piper and the 3 untouched are desiree.

In honesty this particular bed is pretty poor in terms of growth compared to my other beds. My largest are over 2 feet high.

Some of my potatoes didn't get fed properly this year got planted into less fertile soil. I've been pretty time strapped.
