  • Blue Banana?

    https://being.co.uk/hungry/blue-java...QZsnM3MGDGGEHc

I was about to go to bed when I saw this news on Facebook. Is there anyone here who has ever tried to eat a blue banana?

I've seen red skinned ones in Philippines that tasted like good quality bananas and finger sized ones. Never seen blue. Bit dubious about blue, lots of odd things get on FB. Will look into later.
I remember seeing lots of blue roses in catalogues.

I haven't looked at the article you link to, Alexie. But according to a photo on Wikipedia, the bananas from the Blue Java Banana are actually yellow in colour when ripe. So probably not a good idea to eat one in its blue stage.

Just checked Wikipedia. They're only that colour when unripe, ripe they're the usual yellow, so anyone who's been to Asia may well have eaten them.

The red ones are ripe and edible.

Is it old age but bananas now seem to be of inferior taste?

          Hi Alexie and welcome.
          Where do you live?
Since we can't grow bananas, of any colour, in the UK, its a bit outside our range!! How about Blueberries? We can help with those.

Good grief, VC. Are you feeling all right? I'd never have thought such a minor inconvenience would put you off giving it a go!

I've tried normal bananas, Snoop, and failed. To be honest, I don't like the look of a blue banana so not tempted!

Taken at Kew a few years ago.

Bob Flowerdew grows them, but needs to double skin his tunnels.Click image for larger version

The banana plant is at Kew, I took photo myself.

I was looking to see if any pics of it growing over the border, sorry stray image which said they grew it but don't know if they fruited it which if as sunny as you say they will have. That garden looks like it's worth a trip to see.

I've been to the NBGW many times and in the tropical house. Its well worth a visit.

There are fruiting bananas in Cardiff - but again, they're grown professionally in Conservatory Glass houses - not in back gardens.
