  • Raised bed advice.

So today i managed to strim down the wilderness that is my plot and I initially began trying to dig out a bed only to discover the ground is very stony and very difficult to dig. A neighbouring plot recommended raised beds, something I was initially against but now feel it is the best way forward. I'm fine with making them and even have the perfect materials just laying in my shed. My question is about another suggestion he made.
My neighbour suggested lining the bottom of the bed with cardboard to kill of the weeds and grass below it. Do i put the new soil on top of this and just allow the cardboard to rot down or do i need to wait a few weeks, remove the cardboard and then put the new soil in the raised bed?

Soil on top of the cardboard. But, some hardy weeds will make it through eventually.

Leave the cardboard with the earth/compost on top. It's a little apperatif for the worms who will munch through it happily. By the time the cardboard has gone the grass/weeds below will have rotted and the worms will yum that up too.

Dig out the perennial weed first if you can?

Remember that raised beds don't have to have edging around them, they just need the soil to be built up higher than the paths.

Absolutely right, and in fact, my paths are the same height as the beds - woodchip mulch helps keep weeds down on the path, lots and lots of manure on the beds, but no walls or wood or anything containing anything. I do have some pieces of sleepers that I may lay somewhere near the front of the plots as they are pretty, but only ornamental
