Hi Nick. Depends on your needs really. I have used a big heavy old Wolseley Merry Tiller. It does the job but is a bit of a maul, difficult to start, hard to move around, and not very useful for smaller areas. On the other hand (having researched the options), a couple of months ago I bought a Mantis, and I am very very happy with it: it starts easy every time, is light enough to carry around with one hand, and is amazingly powerful for such a small machine. And there's a good number of them about, so you should be able to pick one up within your budget (mine was £125).

    Hope that helps.

I'd check out Ebay to start with - cultivators generally don't get used much so even old second-hand ones usually have plenty of life left in them - as long as you can change a spark plug and put new petrol through it to wash any old stuff out, you ought to be able to get a bargain.

Yep - another vote for eBay. I bought mine off there secondhand in 2012/2013 and have used it about 3 times since then. I’ll be using it again this month as I’m removing a flower bed and grass seeding it but it’s in really good condition as it’s stored indoors and barely been used.

If you have a look on Ebay try a few alternative spellings. My husband did that a few years ago (by accident) and found us a real bargain that nobody else had bid on. When I sold it (again on Ebay) a couple of years later, as by then we had much smaller beds that didn't require a beast, we got quite a lot more for it.
