  • Mutant Runner Bean

I planted all my runners out into cells a week or so ago. They're sprouting nicely now but one has a really strong shoot about 5-6 inchs tall and yesterday I noticed it has another two shoots growing

I've never seen this before - is it anything to do with being saved seed from last years failed crop? This is my second year of growing beans ( and I hope to acually get some this year and not kille most when I transplant them! ) so I don't know if you can get annomilies like this from saved seed?

Only my OH half belives me that there's only one seed in the cell as he saw me plant them. Anyone else ever seen this before and will I get 3 times the crop or will it burn itself out before I get to plant it out?

Im sure u can but only if your crop failed with a pest or a disorder which the seed's could possibly have inherited. If your crop failed last year cause of a late frost or early transplanting or something there is no wayyour new seed will be the same.
Hope i have been of some help.

I have read that runner beans saved from the previous year will not grow true if they were grown near another variety of runner beans because of cross pollination. I saved mine last year and as I grow two varieties next to each other I threw them away. This year however I am going to save them for putting in stews.

No, only 'failed' to grow one variety, not two... They faied as I snapped most of them when I transplanted them.

Maybe my mutant bean is just a little reminder from whatever higher being exists that they're still here eh?

I've got a mutant broad bean, all the others are the normal green colour but one came up light yellow green Its stayed the same colour and is about 5 inches high now. apart from the colour it seems fine.
