  • Goji Berry coming my way. Anyone grown one or used the fruit?

Hi everyone, I’m going to be getting a Goji berry plant that a friend is digging up from his Garden.

Wondered if anyone has experience of growing one and thus some tips for me, soil type, feeding etc etc.

Also, has anyone done much with the Fruit in the Kitchen?

    Kind Regards.............Rob

I know that they like to arch over and root into the ground at their tips so you might need to tie it up to something. Planted one last year and it's growing well and already making advances towards the saskatoon

Its a bit of a thug to be honest - mine never fruited so I probably do something wrong with it.
It took me 3 years to dig it out and kill it off (well, its not quite dead yet - something of a Zombie)

They’re quite thorny but don’t attack you as much as gooseberries when you pick them. I haven’t experimented with the fruit in cooking yet but blackbirds like the fruit (free bird food) they don’t taste of much.

There considered a superfruit, but I dont think there well suited for our climate, to fruit well at least, mine put a lot of growth on each year, but always seem to succumb to powdery mildew, even last year, and dont produce a lot of fruit either, I think ive managed to get one berry in about 5 years of having a plant, the birds seem to like em, so good luck getting any

your mate probably wants rid he will be lucky if he actually does get rid of it though, I have had fresh goji berry plants coming up in areas that have not had a plant in for years

the fruit though is great, I used to get it in juice form from amazon, I had a tablespoon a day and it seemed to get rid of the old aches and pains, also my old dog lost the use of his back legs when he was 13, I started giving him some and it got him another year of walks, bless him

Haha probably Urban. Still think I might. Seems a bit different and exotic. Might try in a very large pot maybe.

Yeah, big pot might be an idea

I don't know for sure... but never let a branch touch the ground just in case it spreads that way...

Just got them. They are 6 inch tall cuttings so I’m going to pot on and keep in my GH for a while to grow on.

                    Kind Regards.............Rob

Good luck.First year I had fruit, but now I have one in a pot which is too small, it produces loads of leaves and no flowers. I also have one growing huge in the ground, again no flowers. Put them in the sunniest place that you can, Im planning to move mine into full sun, from full shade, im still determined to get some fruit off of them yet

                        Update.....

I have potted on into slightly larger pots and put them in the sunny spot on the outside of the GH. They seem happy upto now.

                        Kind Regards.............Rob

I use the berries like this. I cook rice and put some spices in there and i finish up with some goji berries.
