    Bee Fly are Back!

    First time I ever saw one of these funny lil' critters was about four years ago It had me baffled until I went googling and realised what it was! Apparently they lay their eggs in the nests of ground nesting solitary bees and are on the wing in April and May. My allotment neighbour Tony had never heard of them so I described them as ginger flying currants

    Anyone else seen any around?

          We get lots here. Like tiny, furry humming birds.

            Never seen one that I know of, but there was a radio 4 programme last week which covered them. Their larvae eat the larvae of solitary bees apparently. I'm looking out for them now I know they exist!
            Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.

              We have them, didn't know about their relationship with solitary bees though. (The things you learn on a gardening forum )
