Best use of multiple greenhouses

    Best use of multiple greenhouses

    I've finally found 5 minutes to start building the replacement third greenhouse which has been sitting on the patio for nearly 2 years I'm wondering now how best to make the best use of all three.

    I normally spread plants across 2 greenhouses with some of everything in both so as not to risk a complete failure of any one item. I'm wondering now if it would be better to keep each GH to a specific crop, eg toms, peppers and cukes and keep the each greenhouse environment more specific. I know there are lots of you with multiple houses how do you treat them ?

    An easy one for once :-
    1) tea making equipment + radio, and hammock
    2) plants

      The 2 in the sunniest positions and closest to the house are used for all year round growing and, in summer, both have toms and cukes.

      The leanto GH on the house loses the sun once it moves round to the west, so that one is more for flowers/pretty things and propagators as it has power.

      The biggest GH is the shadiest so I use that one for sowing seeds, potting up.

      The smallest one has shelving on all sides and is for trays of seedlings and salads.

      The one thats furthest from the house is also the only one on soil. Sometimes has overflow toms but mostly its just a toolstore!

        I use mine to separate plants for seed saving. It also means I can rotate plants - toms on one side of the border in one etc One has one side with a high up shelf for small seedlings,

          With 2 greenhouses you can have 4 borders for crop rotation. You can also keep those plants that like it humid together in one green house and those which like it a bit dryer in another.

            Are your 3 greenhouses the same size ?
            I only ask because I have 3 different sized polytunnels. And it's very noticeable the difference in heat levels in them. That makes a difference to what I plant in each.

              Greenhouse 1 - tomatoes
              Greenhouse 2 - more tomatoes
              Greenhouse 3 - additional tomatoes
              Greenhouse 4 - extra tomatoes
              Greenhouse 5 - spare tomatoes

                I'm guessing you like tomatoes then Paulie ?

                The houses are 10x8 , 10x6 and 8x6, the only real difference is the quality of the soil in the borders the 10x6 is very poor sand.

                  Is there a difference in location/orientation?
                  Does one have more sun or shade?
                  I don't grow directly in soil but have edged beds in 2 GHs that are topped up with the compost from the tomato pots each year. Its only a few inches deep but is enough for salads.
