  • New allotment - New to allotments

    Hey up folks...

Total newbie here - new to allotments and new to owning one.

Only just signed for the allotment and its been reasonably taken care of, a few beds already cleared and ready for planting, the previous owner has already planted some radishes, which are starting off well.

As you can see from the pics, we already have a greenhouse and shed on the plot, so, we are going to be hitting the ground running with it.

Open to newbie advise, hints and tips to hopefully get us up and running.

    Many thanks

    Andrew

Hi Andrew and welcome to the vine. Sounds like you got lucky there, not every new plot is in such good condition.

Have a good rumage about the forum and ask any questions - there's not silly questions (except for VC - most her questions are silly but in a good way) so don't worry about that.

Once you've posted enough you'll be able to upload photos of your plot (although you msy need to rescale them so the file size is small enough) which means we can all have a nose round as we are a nebby bunch here.

Many thanks for the reply Jay. Yes, i'll be having a good root around here, trying to clean some advise. We have dropped on really well with this plot. Just need to do a few repairs on the shed roof to weather seal it...greenhouse all intact, compost bins made...

It sounds like a good plot if it's been left in good condition AND with a shed & greenhouse My first plot was like that too - left in immaculate condition by the previous tenant which was a huge help as I was completely new to growing vegetables.

The one thing I DID learn from my first year in 2015 was don't turn your back on the weeds in late May & June as the little blighters will grow like beanstalks overnight and take over!!! A family bereavement meant I didn't have much time to spare for 2-3 weeks (apart from quick evening visits to water stuff in the greenhouse & polytunnel) and once normal visits were resumed it was like a jungle!!! Took weeks to get it back under control as I kinda panicked.....instead of just getting stuck in and pulling weeds up.

Otherwise......enjoy! Grow your own is fantastic fun and this forum is a mine of information and help

              Wow!
(BTW, is next door seriously bending the rules on sheds, or is that the boundary fence... )

What the others said about weeds.

Make notes as you go (the weather, how things grew/didn't grow, conditions, shade, where you planted stuff etc). Then next year you'll have a lot more information.

Little and often helps, if you can get down there and do a bit of an evening (for example) it stops it getting out of control.

              start your compost heap now...

Many thanks for all the tips - Luckily its very close to where we live, so, ideal for us to pop round for a little while after work to try and keep on top of things. Appreciate the advise on the weeds.

It is, perfect size really for our first plot...both myself and partner work all day, so, we didn't want one overly big so lucked out well with this...

Ha ha ha...presume you mean the BIG white and red pad behind our greenhouse? yes, that's HUGE....ha ha

Appreciate the tips...really looking forward to growing this year...Compost heap was started a couple of weeks back before the previous owner moved on to a bigger one, so, again lucky, have had a good start

Looks like a lovely plot, and it’ll look even better in a few months when you’re ready to start harvesting;-)
