  • Pick of the Day

    My latest daft idea
The aim is to pick something, fruit or veg or herb, each day and make it Star of the day. Not just lob it into a mix but enjoy it in its own right. Maybe, even serve it on its own plate and appreciate it, raise its status and thank it for sacrificing itself for you.

OK, I'm nuts, but I really don't make the most of the things I grow so I'm going to try a bit harder.

Today I found 4 parsnips in a couple of buckets. They were roasted and eaten, chunk by chunk, and I really enjoyed them.
Thank you parsnips, you were amazing.

I will watch this thread closely. I also don't treat all my veg with the respect it always deserves.

I'll watch this thread with some curiosity. Will it last much longer than the parsnips?

Pick of the day is ..................Onions - but not your normal sort of onions. These are onions that were planted last year and didn't bulb up - so I forgot all about them. Now they are all shooting with lovely long green leaves and no sign of flowers. When I pulled some up, I found that each onion had split into two fat white with green leaves spring onion like things. Cleaned up, they were perfectly formed and pest free.
I've chopped some and lightly fried them, eaten with some mash potato cakes and a yellow-stickered sweet potato bake, all sprinkled with some home-made Apple mint sauce.

Thank you onions, I may have abandoned you over winter but you came good and were delicious. I'm looking forward to picking more of your siblings soon.

Perhaps not this time of year, but later I like to try everything I grow straight from the ground.....raw(except potatoes), some things like Sweetcorn are always eaten raw now, unless the grandson turns up for a Barbie and he wants some of grandads fresh corn on the cob.

Today's Pick was Lettuce - as I have a GH full of self seeded ones.
Normally, I eat just a few leaves at a time, in a mixed salad for example. Not today, oh No, today I had a lettuce sandwich! A filling of leaves at least an inch thick, between 2 slices of buttered bread.
Pressed together firmly, to stop the Great Escape, it was surprisingly delicious.

Lettuce, you deserve more appreciation than you get. You're not just a garnish, you're a meal in your own right.
Thank you Lettuce for always being there when I need you.

Yesterday, it was more of the onions that I ate a couple of days ago. Thank you onions you were just as delicious this time.

Today, a bunch of the freshest, most succulent, strangely shaped, randomly sown carrots were pulled from the C bed. They came from the soil glowing, like the finest gemstones. A quick scrub and dunk in boiling water and they were on my plate and they tasted divine.
Thank you carrots, you made my meal something special tonight.

Just like you Chrissy, I've picked my first slender rhubarb sticks. Only 3 but enough to turn the cooking water a glorious pink. Add a generous dollop of yogurt and it was divine.
Thank you rhubarb, some say you're a vegetable but you'll always be the first fruit of the year to me.

Today I pulled a giant parsnip from its bucket. Such a beautiful parsnip, perfect creamy skin without a blemish. Lush green foliage, undamaged by weather or pests.
Roasted with some garden onions it was sublime.

Thank you parsnip, your sacrifice was not in vain, you were perfect and I hope your remaining siblings in the other buckets will be your equal.
