  • Veg in One Bed

"Veg in One Bed" is the title of a newly published book by Huw Richards, who has a popular You tube channel and a lot of knowledge and experience packed into the head of a 20 year old young man.
I bought the book as I was wanted to know more (and it was on offer at Bo0k Pe0ple).
The book is based on how to grow veg, year round, in a bed measuring 10' by 4'.
The bed is split into 1' wide rows and it tells you what to sow each month with plenty of diagrams.
If you follow the plan, you grow 19 different vegetables during the year.
I found it easier to follow than Square Foot Gardening and its perfect for the gardener who wants to be guided month by month on which seeds to start, without too many complications.
I liked it and would recommend it to anyone who is unsure what to do next, or has limited space and wants to maximise their crops.
In fact, I liked it enough to try it myself this year - even though straight lines and being told what to do are anathema to me.

The growing year starts in March so there still time to join in.

    That looks really good VC.
I might give that a go. Especially when I leave here, because garden may have to be down sized for a while.

I'm with you on the having trouble getting my head round SFG.

I think your level of skill goes beyond the book but.........what I liked was the simplicity of it - and the diagrams of the bed, as it fills up over the months.

As a taster, in March, you plant 2 x 1' rows of spuds and 2 x 6" rows of lettuce and the same of radish - but staggered by 2 weeks.
Start pea shoots indoors and broad beans.

By the end of March, you're eating pea shoots and your radish and lettuces are showing.

There are 4 other planting plans, so you could have 5 beds, all different.

It feels a bit like going back to basics - maybe that would do me good for a while.

You're very kind but any skill I portray is a facade . Unless of course winging it is a skill level. In which case............nailed it .

I'll have a look at some of his tube videos later, when Bob has gone to work.

It just sounds to me like another way to make some money by putting out yet another book with yet another take on gardening.

We already have square foot gardening, moon gardening, lasagne gardening, straw bale gardening, no-dig gardening, to name but a few. How many ways can their be to garden?

I think I will write a book called "Common Sense Gardening" and jump on the bandwagon!:

I have never used FOUR rolleyes (sarcastic) emoji's in a thread before.

Sorry folks, but I am feeling a bit grumpy this morning.Maybe I should have put this in the minor rant thread?

Lasagna gardening? That’s a new one on me.

Surely that kind of planning isn’t your style VC? Your randomness is much more fun!

Hmm, I think you have to log in to order and unless you've told everyone your passcode they minght find it difficult.

Yes I agree, you're grumpy today.

This book is not aimed at seasoned allotment growers but at those who want to make their first steps into growing something. Maybe they've grown in pots before and want to step up without making a big commitment.
We've all seen the questions on the SFG thread - the bed sizes may be the same but its mega complicated. What can I plant in square XYZ and when? Do I need the special "mix"? There aren't many who seem to make a success of it.
This Veg book holds your hand throughout the year. What to do each month, what to sow and where to plant it. It may be too simple for some but I can think of several Grapes who might benefit from it.

Maybe I should have put this in the "New Shoots" board but I thought it would be of interest to others too.

I thought it would help as and when I have to give up my big plot and can only grow in the veg bed in the garden.
Small space gardening is a bit less forgiving, than an allotment, so guidance on smaller quantities for a given space, and then follow on planting, would be very helpful IMO
