  • Is Blackwall best?

Am thinking i need to get a new dalek compost bin. I have a homemade pallet one and a dalek type one (well more plastic bin). They are both full and I have been using one of those pop up canvas bins but it's not great. Was doing a wee search on the vine and i found an old thread that suggested Blackwall were the best make. Is that the case? Not looking to spend much as it is an extra one.

Check your local council as some do cheap compost bins.

Had a look but doesn’t look like they do unfortunately.

Have you tried gumtree, ebay, freecycle, preloved? There are often daleks on there for free or very little.

Also try an app called shpock if you're app savvy. I've had a few off there for a tenner or less.

I've got 4 council ones on my plot 3, didn't ask for them they suddenly appeared but it was last year after a very windy weekend. I left them weighed down with a brick hoping the owners would walk around and reclaim them back but they have never done, so they are mine now and will be put to use once plot 3 is further dug over.

Plot 1 had a foreign dalek appear last year but was quickly claimed back by someone a few plots down after the same storm. Everyone gets one for free from the council when you take the plot on if you haven't got one but some people never bother using them which is why they migrate to other plots, Mike 3 plots from me has 6 that have emigrated to his plot over time but there they are in full use.

                  Hi,
If you've room, start a new pallet one, they're far superior than any dalek style composter.
I find Dalek composters are difficult to turn and mix the compost, whereas pallet composting allows greater aeration and speedier compost production. Downsides, you have to put more in it, but if you've lots to put in then it's a win win

Thanks guys. Managed to get a 220l Blackwall one. Looks really big so can make loads of compost for next year. Will sit alongside my pallet one and other Dalek one.

Have to say I have seen a massive difference since I bought a dalek compost bin. My others are a diy plastic barrel and a home made pallet type. It is significantly warmer in the dalek - we tested it with a soil thermometer. When I took the lid off the other day it steamed up my glasses! Hoping that means it’ll turn my scraps into lovely compost quicker.

Another place to try would be your local council tip. Many now have a ‘recycle’ shop where they sell things that are still in decent nick, but previous owners were about to throw out.
