  • Mushroom growing kits

    Hi there

Never grown Mushrooms before so in a fit of madness when I was wandering around Wilkos gardening section and by chance spotted some ordinary common or garden Mushroom growing kits I decided to purchase one to just see if I can manage to grow any or fail miserably. I've been thinking about trying the more adventurous types of mushroom like the exotic sounding Shiitake, Oyster and Chestnut but didn't want to waste my dosh if I failed to get even one to appear.

Just took the box out of the airing cupboard to check progress as its been a week in there and to spray moist the compost to keep any progress going and its looks like its another success. Had to take a photo to show you as I wasn't confident I would get anything but it looks good so far. Does anyone here grow mushrooms and which of the more exotic would you recommend to try next after these ordinary mushrooms?

Bought a growing kit for my husband in January. It is oyster mushrooms I think. Some success - got a reasonable clump quite quickly. After that nothing much seemed to be happening so he put it back in the dark - think that was the wrong thing as noting grew. Since we have put it back in the kitchen it’s started producing mushrooms again. The other day he took the plastic lid off as the mushrooms were reaching the top. That also seemed a bad idea as they seemed to dry out pretty quickly. Generally think it’s sort of interesting to see them grow but don’t think we will get much of a crop in the end and not sure i would bother again.

I enjoy growing mushrooms. Oyster mushrooms are easy. Used to grow them under my bed as a student...

I have bought the odd off the shelf kit before and get mixed results, I guess sometimes they are getting a bit old when you get them.

I order from mushroombox and annforfungi.com now and get much more consistent results plus a bit wider range of mushrooms. The different types of oyster mushroom might be worth a go if ypu like the standard grey type
