  • Weird things into compost

Think I’ve started to get a bit obsessed with putting everything I possibly can into my compost bin rather then the bin. Have started putting the dog hair in after I brush him and wondering last night as I cut my nails whether nail clippings would be ok. This may be a risky question, but what’s the weirdest thing you put in your compost?

    Cat litter!
What Mollycat uses is either a clay or occasionally a wood pellet product - none of the scented posh stuff, so all ok to use. I remove all the 'solids' and add the rest, plus the paper liner to the dalek along with any torn up cardboard and the kitchen peelings. Lovely stuff after a year or 2....

Bob Flowerdew once put a dead deer on his compost heap.

My Dad often used to put pheasant carcasses in - the only time I have ever seen balls of brandling worms and they were great for fishing with but that was years ago.

Also I don't remember it smelling. It was an old coal bunker and he used to leave the top open but covered with carpet. It seemed rather normal at the time

Phew, I can own up: I put our dead chickens in our dalek. Can't put them in the rubbish, can't bury them or the dogs will dig them up. They don't smell. Never had a problem with rodents (that I know of). I also put pet hair and our hair in there. And pee, of course. That goes without saying.

My hair cuttings, what little there is of them, and things like credit card statements that would usually be shredded.

Nail clippings are fine - they are made up of the same stuff as hair. Both will take a while to rot down.

I put all my food waste (of which, apart from peelings, there is not a huge amount) in the hotbin, and I wipe out greasy pans etc with kitchen paper and that goes in. The contents of the hoover also go in, but I do seem to have some part nylon carpets (which came with the house) so I find clumps of unrotted fibres in the compost. Potatoes still grow well in it. If I was more organized I would put some of the loo paper (not from poo though) in as well, but I've usually flushed it away before I remember!

I've tried adding a shredded old wool jumper, but even though the label insisted it was "pure new wool" it isn't yet rotted after 2 years, so I haven't done that again.

Someone in my extended family likes putting teaspoons in the compost!
And my wife's old wallet including old bank cards, etc.
I get big bags of shredded paper from work for the chicken coop so that all goes in with the chicken mess.

I used to put the clay based litter tray content onto the compost heap at the allotment, but now I usually use a crystal based litter which isn't suitable. I might go back to a clay based actually, now that I have huge compost bins again.
All of my paper waste goes in there - tissue paper, bills, kitchen roll...
                      Chicken poo and bedding
                      Nothing terribly weird I'm afraid!

I'm currently experimenting with bokashi composting - only a week or two in so early doors. I'm thinking that compostable bags + bokashi grain + somewhere to store might lead to almost everything (vaguely) organic getting composted - probably depends on how anaerobic the bags are...

                        cat poo
                        chicken carcasses
                        dead mice/rats/squirrels

the list is almost endless (potentially)

Used to empty children's pottys in there (wee only). Old cotton clothes go in as well. Have occasionally found small plastic toys which have ended up in the compost after some enthusiastic game....

haha Yes, four. I personally use a porcelain toilet, not a plastic tray
